Plans to view the JW Turner exhibition on Thursday 23rd January 2025 didn’t go as hoped, but a few members turned the day around with a visit to the Royal Academy, enjoying a rewarding mix of artistic treasures.
One that particularly stood out was this haunting image, taken during the Vietnam War in 1968, one of McCullin’s most iconic works. It captures a young marine in a moment of profound psychological distress, his eyes fixed in a distant stare—a silent protest against the brutality of war.
Shell-shocked US Marine, The Battle of Hue” by Don McCullin—has been part of the ARTIST ROOMS collection, jointly held by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate. It has been displayed at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh
